What type of SSL (TLS) / Secure Certificate do I need?

There are several types of TLS (SSL) Certificates (also known as Secure Certificates) that you can choose from.  Technically SSL has been deprecated and TLS has replaced it technology wise but the common SSL phrase is still used by many people. This article explains the differences between the various types of secure certificates:

What is Standard DV SSL (TLS)?

Domain Validation certificates offer an economical and quick way to implement TLS (SSL) to your website. Domain Validated certificates verify you own the domain, but do not perform any additional organization level validation.

Domain Validated certificates are ideal for personal websites, blogs and social media, or any sites that are not transmitting private and confidential information. A Domain Validated certificate activates the browser padlock and enables the use of https to assure your website visitors and customers that you take their privacy seriously.

What is Organization Validation SSL (TLS)?

Organization Validated SSL Certificates provide instant identity confirmation and strong TLS (SSH) protection for your website and business.

OV SSL (Also known as Company Validation - CV) is an organization validated certificate that gives your website a step up in credibility over domain validated TLS (SSL) Certificates. It activates the browser padlock and https, shows your corporate identity, and assures your customers that you take security very seriously. Site visitors can verify that the website is operated by a legitimate company and is not an imposter site.

What is Extended Validation SSL (TLS)?

EV SSL is an Extended Validation Certificate, the highest class of SSL/TLS available today and gives more credibility and trust to your website compared to using an organization or domain validated SSL/TLS Certificate.

Extended Validation SSL activates the green address bar and displays your company or organization name in the browser address bar. These prominent visual security indicators let visitors know that extra steps were taken to confirm the site they're visiting, increasing user trust in your website and its credibility – this is why most large companies and organizations choose EV certificates.

What is a Wildcard SSL Certificate (TLS)?

Wildcard SSL allows you to secure an unlimited number of subdomains on a single certificate. It’s a great solution for anyone who hosts or manages multiple sites or pages that exist on the same domain. The one-time cost of the certificate covers you for additional subdomains you may add in the future.

Unlike a standard TLS (SSH) Certificate that is issued to a single Fully Qualified Domain Name only, e.g. www.yourdomain.com, which means it can only be used to secure the exact domain to which it has been issued, a Wildcard SSL Certificate is issued to *.yourdomain.com, where the asterisk represents all possible subdomains.

Wildcard SSL is an option available for DV and OV SSL/TLS Certificates.
